The fate of the world is threatened by seemingly monstrous entities known as Angels. The film focuses on a young teenager named Shinji Ikari, who is asked to pilot a mecha known as "Evangelion Unit-01" to protect the world from mysterious creatures known as Angels. The plot is largely a point-for-point adaptation of the first six episodes of the original anime. While some scenes and events are replications of the original series, others unfold differently with new or omitted scenes and newly-available 3D CG technology. The film received a positive response from fans, with Hideaki Anno himself calling it a "faithful remake of the original series". The film was ranked as the 4th-highest grossing anime film at the Japanese box office during 2007, earning a total of 2 billion yen.

The film features the voices of Christina Ricci, Taissa Farmiga, Miguel Ferrer, Stuart Allan, Brandon Soo Hoo, Jake T. Austin, Kari Wahlgren, Sean Maher, Gregg Henry, and Meg Foster. This film marks Miguel Ferrer's final performance before his death at age 61 from throat cancer. It had its world premiere at WonderCon on March 31, 2017. The film was released through digital download on April 4, 2017 and through home media on April 18, 2017 by Warner Home Video. Additionally in the film, Crispin Freeman, Jason Spisak and Masasa Moyo reprise their respective roles from Young Justice as Roy Harper/Speedy, Wally West/Kid Flash and Karen Beecher/Bumblebee.

Taking a turn in tone comes "Odd One Out" a non-cannon parody of the Halo storyline. "Prototype" tells the story of a Marine who goes against his orders to destroy an advanced prototype armor and uses the suit to buy time for civilians evacuating from the planet.
